Master Thesis student (d/f/m) in the field of Linear Control Analysis Methodology

You are looking for a master thesis and want to get to know the work of a job title? Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in the “Thermal Systems & Products Germany” department as a master student (d/f/m)!

  • Location: Friedrichshafen

  • Start: 01.09.2024

  • Duration: 6 month

A software tool has been developed at Airbus Defence and Space GmbH which transfers the thermal network used in the classical lumped parameter method of satellite systems thermal analysis to a standard linear control system, and subsequently solves this system either in the standard time domain or in the frequency domain. Application of this type of analysis becomes more and more important for missions where extremely demanding requirements on geometrical and thus thermo-elastic stability are involved. It allows specific thermal stability analyses without running extensive transient thermal analysis and offers improved accuracy and limited analysis effort. To date some non-linear solver used for additional analysis types have already been implemented in the given tool. Yet, more variability is requested for further progress.

Present reference missions are the joint ESA-NASA Cosmic Vision missions LISA to be launched in late 2030s, and ESAs galactic census mission Gaia, launched in 2013.

In order to achieve an accuracy that would allow to measure, if the sensor was on Earth, the thumbnail of a person on the Moon, the Gaia stability requirements are to be evaluated over a 6 hour observation cycle in the standard time domain.

LISA will be an interferometer made up of three identical spacecraft separated from each other by 2.5 million km with the mission to detect gravitational waves from astronomical sources by measuring periodic distance changes in the range of 10-10m. The LISA stability requirements are specified in the frequency domain, which requires applying the Laplace Transform on the linear control system. Previous work established methods for solving the linear control system in the standard time domain and in the frequency domain.

In the beginning the student shall review the available tool and relevant functions or routines to suggest improvements. Depending on the outcome, a final tool shall be established which creates inputs for automatically running the thermal model, based on heat balance calculation, and also create all necessary outputs for post-processing. Finally, the tool shall allow comparing different analysis results with the corresponding load case.
